The Whirlwind Adventure Race is a small urban
adventure race to last approximately 3.5 to 6 hours. The
Whirlwind Adventure Race is a race for novices to the professional.
Whether you are trying Adventure Racing for the first time
or have competed before, the Whirlwind Adventure Race is
sure to challenge you.
The Whirlwind Adventure Race is compiled of teams of three.
In an adventure race each team stays together during the
entire race completing all stages as a unit. If one drops
out or can’t go on the entire team is disqualified.
Teamwork is above all else the single biggest factor in
completing an adventure race. All three teammates must compete
together and stay together the whole day through every discipline.
There are four different categories to compete in. The Co-ed
Division consisting of one male and two females or two males
and one female, the All Female division, the All Male division,
or the Family Division, which consists of someone under
the age of 18 with someone at or over the age of 18 on the
same team.
The Whirlwind Adventure Race starts on Saturday May 21st
2005 at 10 am and most teams should be done by 4:00 in the
afternoon. The disciplines for the race include biking,
water activity, running, navigating, and the Triad, which
has one team member on a scooter, one member on a pair of
in-line skates and the third member on a bike. During the
race all team members must stay together and move at the
same pace. Team work is stressed throughout this race.
The Whirlwind Adventure Race course is unmarked and teams
must be able to navigate thru the tri-city area, using a
map and compass, finding designated checkpoints in order.
Second, no streets or paths are closed for the event, so
while you are competing, you must pay attention to traffic
laws and show proper respect for the general public. Finally,
a single central transition area will be where teams change
disciplines and stage their gear for each leg of the race.
For this reason, support crews are not required for the
Whirlwind Adventure Race.
In an effort to make adventure racing more accessible and
affordable, we have kept the gear requirements to a minimum.
The gear list tab on the website outlines a very short list
of required and suggested gear.
Hopefully this information assists you in deciding if the
Whirlwind Adventure Race is for you. We hope to see you
on May 21st!
